Valley of fire

Valley of Fire is located just out of Overton which is a small farming town near the upper end of Lake Mead.  You can get there on the interstate towards Salt Lake City or the best way is to enter Lake Mead Recreational area, spend some time exploring the road north into Overton.  This is a great motorcycle ride also.

The rock formations are outstanding and full of color.  It is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen in the evening light around sundown.

Ancient Petroglyph's can be found in several locations and some date back to 300 BC

As this is a work in progress (blog started March 26 2010) I will add more over time.  Please check back often and let your knowledge of this historic area grow with me and this site.

I had lived in Las Vegas for more than 5 years before I discovered the fascinating historic areas surrounding our city.  Once the discovery process began I continue to find and do things only enjoyed and  witnessed by a relativity few humans.  Valley of Fire is one of the most missed areas by visitors to Vegas.

This photo was taken in the petroglyph canyon leading to "Mouse's Tank" it's about a 1/4 mile walk down to the "tank" from the road.  The tank is a formation which makes a basin that tends to hold water for up to 6 months after a good rain.  That would make this a great discovery in this desert.  Mouse was an Indian who ran afoul the law back in the 1890's.  It is claimed that mouse killed a couple of prospectors and was hunted for sometime by the authorities.  Mouse used the "tank" as a hideout and was finally killed in a shootout with the law in 1897 after a posse tracked him down.
